Real life...
Valeria delle Stelle di Fiorenza was born in 1492, daughter of a Florentine scholar who really wanted a son, so that he could pass to him all his knowledge. However, her mother died when she was very young, and that brought her and her father very close, so he did eventually teach her Latin and Greek as well as French, music and philosophy. Since she was also the lady of the house, so she learned all the household skills and cooking (her father was learned but not very affluent). After he died, she sold everything they had in Florence and decided to travel and earn a living as a musician or housekeeper. Her itinerary brought her to Wales and she decided to stay for a while, even though the weather is too miserable for her Italian temperament.
